Comes possibly from Auguste-Joseph Carrier (18020-1875), by 1867.
19th century
This is possibly the watercolor upon which Théophile Thoré remarked:"M. Carrier still owns another charming portrait, painted in watercolors, by Bonington, that of their fellow student, M. Godefroy, seated on a small rise in a clear landscape." Bonington, Auguste-Josph Carrier and Pierre-Julien Gaudefroy were fellow students under Baron Antoine-Jean Gros. A watercolor sketch has been identified on occasion as another portrait of Gaudefroy.
