Simple and advanced search in the works of art database  

 

HELP

A database search makes it easy to find what you are looking for. Simply enter any words that may be contained in the description of the work under one of the seven headings: Free Text, Artist, Title, Location, Date, Time Period, Category.
You can refine your search by entering information under several headings.
To limit your search to files that contain an image of the work, click on "With image".
You can also select the number of works that will be displayed on each page: 6, 12, 18, 24 or 36.

How to Define Your Search

To define your search, select the search criteria by:


Search Operators

Search operators allow you to broaden or limit your search when you enter words in a field.

Or Operator

When placed between two or more words, the space indicates that the pages found must include at least one of the words entered.

woman (space) standing

All the pages that contain the word "woman" or the word "standing"

Stemming Operator
 
When placed after a word, it allows you to look for all the possible variations of that word.

paint*

All the pages that contain the words "paint", "painter", "painting", etc.

(this group of words)

Quote Operator

By placing quotation marks around a group of words, only the pages that contain those words in that order will be displayed.

"woman standing"

All the pages that contain the phrase "woman standing", but not those that contain the phrase "women standing"

(all these words)

Plus Operator

When placed before a word, it indicates that the pages found must include that word.

+woman (space) +standing

All the pages that contain the words "woman" and "standing"

+woman (space) standing

All the pages that contain the word "woman". Those that also contain the word "standing" will be given priority.

-
(except)

Minus Operator

When placed before a word, with no space after it, it indicates that the pages found must not include that word.

+woman (space)
-standing

All the pages that contain the word "woman", except those that contain the word "standing"



List
When you open a list, you can select as many criteria as you wish.
To deselect one or more criteria, click on that criteria either on the list or under "Current Selection".
Click on "OK" to add your selection to the search form. You can modify your selection at any time by reopening the list.

How to Finalize or Modify Your Search

You can:
- select as many criteria as you wish
- deselect one or more criteria, if necessary

Search Results

To display a list of results, click on "Search".

To display the description of a work:
- if you have not requested images, click on one of the items (Artist, Title, Location)
- if you have requested images, click on the image
The number of works corresponding to your search is calculated and shown in the left corner of the results bar. Click on "Next", "Previous" or the number of the page you want to see ( 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 ...) to move from one page to another.

Description of the Work

On the page displaying the description of the work, click on "Next" or "Previous" to move from one work to the next.
Click on "Back" to return to the list of results.

Note

It is best to use the "Back" and "Modify Your Search" buttons than the Back and Forward buttons on your browser.
