Ici ont débarqué le 26 juin 1917 convoyées par la flotte des Etats-Unis les premières troupes des forces expéditionnaires américaines champions du droit et de la liberté aux cotés des soldats de la France et de ses alliés. Erigé grace aux souscriptions populaires de tous les états de l'union américaine pour commemorer une grande cause et pour honorer l'idéal impérissable de liberté qui unit les deux républiques. Inauguré le 26 juin 1926.

1917: A committee composed of American army officers is founded and named the "Saint-Nazaire Memorial Fund, Incorporated." Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney is commissioned to execute the monument. 1924: At the Municipal Council on September 22, the mayor of Saint-Nazaire announces that another committee, the Association de la Base Section n° 1 de Saint-Nazaire has been formed to aid in the erection of a monument to commemorate the landing of American troops on June 26. 1926: Inauguration of the statue on June 26, in the presence of the Ministre de la Marine, the Ministre des Travaux Publics, the United States ambassador, the Generals Gouraud and Pershing, the mayor of the town and the former mayor. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney is decorated with the Legion of Honor. 1941: The monument is destroyed by German bombs on December 13. 1956: In February, Mrs. Macculloch Miller, the sculptor's daughter, presents the maquette of the monument to the town. 1989: A new monument by sculptor Pierre Fouesnant is put in place and inaugurated on June 5.
