Comment

Henry Schiff (1833-1906) a physician, was born in New Orleans and raised in France. After serving as a doctor in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he practiced medicine in New York and later traveled to Europe. He lived successively in Italy, Spain, and Paris, and never returned to the United States. A close friend of the sculptor, he was also a noted collector of Chinese and Japanese bronzes.

Other casts: at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, Cornish, New Hampshire and in several private collections. There are two identical casts in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay (MEDOR 1434 1 et MEDOR 1434 2).
