Benjamin West, the court painter of King George III, received a commission to paint decorative panels for the royal chapel at Windsor Palace in 1780. The initial plan, realized with the help of the architect William Chanbers, was apparently based on the old 17th century chapel designed by Hugh May. It projected some twenty-six paintings on themes from the Old Testament. In 1796, Chanbers was replaced by James Wyatt and in 1801, West was ordered to suspend his work. The planned chapel was never built. West made two preparatory studies (Bx 1966 12 2 and Bx 1966 12 3) for the pendants of the main triptych. (Source: Records of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux)
