Donated by Alexandre Vattemare to the Bibliothèque Impériale in 1861.


Comment

This medal was awarded to Washington by a decision of Congress of March 25, 1776. At the same time, a commission was named to edit a letter that was written on this occasion to the General in the name of the Congress on the subject of this medal and of its inscriptions. The commission was composed of John Adams, John Jay and ? Hopkin. The design for the medal was made by Simitière and the engraving was done by Duvivier. The coins are conserved at the Monnaie impériale.
