Leo Mortimer Schiff and Fanny Frieda Schiff were the children of Jacob Schiff, a New York banker and philanthropist of German origin who had made his fortune in railroads. Schiff was a noted patron of the arts.
Other casts exist: at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site, Cornish, New Hampshire, at the Metropolian Museum of Art, New York, and in a private collection in Pennsylvania.
