Comment

1898: Robert J. Thompson of Chicago proposes the creation of a Lafayette memorial commission. A subscription taken up among the schoolchildren of the United States raises $50, 000. 1899: The statue is commissioned from Bartlett. He works in the village of Saint-Leu, north of Paris. 1900: the first model, in bronzed plaster, is put provisionally in place in time for the 4th of July. The bronze could not be ready by that date. It is unveiled by American and French schoolchildren (among them, the great-grandson of Lafayette). 1900-1907: Bartlett, not content with his model, reworks it. 1908: The monument is installed in June. 1984: Because of the construction work going on at the Louvre (archaeological digs and the erection of the Pei pyramid) the monument is moved to the Cours-la-Reine, across from the Grand Palais.
