Historical

Offered with its pendant by Benjamin West's son to the American national collection, but refused. Sold at Robins, London, 22 - 25 May 1829, n° 126. Purchased by Renton. Sold at Christie's of London, July 8, 1927, n° 96 for the pair. Bought by the Countess de la Béraudière for 30 guineas. Acquired by B. Chesnais, Paris, at the Marché Biron, Saint-Ouen, 1966. Purchased by the City of Bordeaux, 1967.


Comment

Benjamin West, the court painter of King George III, received a commission to paint decorative panels for the royal chapel at Windsor Palace in 1780. The initial plan, realized with the help of the architect William Chanbers, was apparently based on the old 17th century chapel designed by Hugh May. It projected some twenty-six paintings on themes from the Old Testament. In 1796, Chanbers was replaced by James Wyatt and in 1801, West was ordered to suspend his work. The planned chapel was never built. West made two preparatory studies (Bx 1966 12 2 and Bx 1966 12 3) for the pendants of the main triptych.
